The Lincon Highway

“For what is kindness but the performance of an act that is both beneficial to other and unrequired? For Kindness begins where necessity ends.”

A 600 pager, the book starts off as a family drama that takes a turn towards complex human behaviour. Three friends and a brother- Emmett, Duchess, Wolly and Billy set off for western coast but the journey takes them in the opposite direction to New York and display their childhood conditioning and errors of life.

Its a book where the writer isn’t in hurry to jump to the next detail, where details are explained to be understood and grasped. The characters have a character, even the notorious ones like Duchess.

I personally liked the way Billy, a child of 8 has been portrayed, the way he understands his surrounding and acts upon them, his relationship with every character in book is formed. The fact that Billy will think before saying and understand the unsaid. His love for stories and everything normal is what we strive to obtain till now.

Throughout the book, there are life lessons that one gasps at. The “aha” moment of reading your thoughts about life or a different perspective of things that life offers. If this book teaches you anything, it’s that never ever judge a person from their present, if you truly want to understand them, look at their past conditioning, the childhood the events to know why they are the way they are.

Its a book (though) lengthy is one I thoroughly enjoyed and it resonated with my New Year goals.

Book Recommendation for the week. The Lincoln Highway by Amor Towles.

This is the second book that I have read by Amor Towles and both are so nicely written. Its a book (though) lengthy is one I thoroughly enjoyed and it resonated with my New Year goals.
